Prepositions

Prepositions (מִלּוֹת יַחַס – milot yachas) play a crucial role in Hebrew sentence structure, indicating direction, location, time, cause, and other relationships between words. Unlike many other languages, Hebrew prepositions can merge with the definite article ה(ha-), and some prepositions change form when combined with pronouns.

Common Prepositions in Hebrew

1. Prepositions of Place and Direction

Merging Prepositions with the Definite Article

In Hebrew, the prepositions ב- (be-), ל- (le-), and מ- (mi-) merge with the definite article ה (ha-), forming a single word.

Rules for Merging Prepositions with the Definite Article:

Preposition + Article Merged Form Translation
ב + הבית (ha-bayit) בבית (ba-bayit) "In the house"
ל + הבית (ha-bayit) לבית (la-bayit) "To the house"
מ + הבית (ha-bayit) מהבית (me-ha-bayit) "From the house"

Examples in Sentences:

Hebrew Transliteration Translation
אני בבית Ani ba-bayit I am at home
הוא הולך לבית הספר Hu holech la-beyt-sefer He is going to school
היא יצאה מהבית מוקדם Hi yatza me-ha-bayit mukdam She left the house early

Important Notes:

- You cannot say ב הַבַּיִת (be ha-bayit); the correct form is בַּבַּיִת (ba-bayit).

- You cannot say ל הַשּׁוּק (le ha-shuk); the correct form is לַשּׁוּק (la-shuk) – "to the market."

Conclusion

Prepositions are a crucial part of Hebrew grammar, helping structure sentences. They can indicate place, direction, time, cause, manner, or instrument. Some prepositions merge with the definite article ה, making pronunciation smoother and speech more natural.
